I think it’s kind of funny when people say Snape did everything he did “for Harry” because he definitely didn’t. Snape is what we call an “anti-hero.” Anything heroic he did, he did for the wrong reasons—or reasons that are generally selfish and not really heroic. He had his own agenda.
Snape didn’t protect Harry because he cared about Harry or even because he wanted to help save the world from Voldemort. Everything he did, he did for Lily. He stopped being a Death Eater not because he knew it was wrong, but because Voldemort killed someone he cared about. He felt hurt and guilty and probably felt like he owed it to Lily to protect her son, but he never even liked Harry. If all the years of psychological abuse aren’t enough proof, Dumbledore flat out asks Snape if he’s come to care about Harry and Snape all but tells him, “Don’t be a prat, it’s all about Lily.”
Snape didn’t do anything remotely heroic until it became personal. If Voldemort hadn’t gone after Lily, I doubt he would’ve changed. Snape was not a hero and he was definitely not a good person.
Snape was, however, an anti-hero and an amazing character. I love him on those merits and ultimately roll my eyes whenever I see Snape glorification.
I also think James Potter was a far better human being that Severus Snape ever was and it pisses me off when I see him demonized by the fandom.
